Same as it never was...

It's about the uproar that Dish is causing with it's new Hopper and it's ability to skip advertising.   Like the fellow who retweeted this, @mikedelic, I am lmao.  I remember the advent of cable TV, back before the internet was the latest wave of invention to ride.  Back then, we were ecstatic that we could actually pay for TV programming so that we didn't HAVE to endure the onslaught of commercials.  I'm speaking of course about stations such as HBO and Showtime and MTV and CNNand TNT- the broadcast stations still had those annoying blurbs, but it was refreshing to feel as though we had a choice because after all we were paying for that privelege.

Back then, Home Box Office actually showed movies ALL THE TIME- with the exception of really awesome little 'shorts'.  MTV actually played music ALL DAY LONG and didn't feel the need to blur it's lines or completely erase them by way of regularly scheduled non-music programs.  And CNN was there to actually give news instead of dishing it with a healthy side of advertising.  Yep, cable TV was young and fresh and new and relatively inexpensive and we loved it!   For awhile anyway.  Then the advertising started to creep in- in places that it shouldn't and all of a sudden one was left wondering just exactly what it was they were paying for. 

Skip ahead to 2012.  We still hate those annoying commercials and the advertising that the internet dishes out and tracks people by.  Seems that the People In Charge Of Advertising forget that we are not puppets that will sit and endure their constant onslaught.  For now, we know how to get up and walk away during a commercial and we still hold the freedom to NOT click on an adlink.  For now anyway.

I Am Not A Rock Star

I know, 'cause I tried to be one and I sucked at it!  You've never heard of me before, now have you?  Nuf said. 

I am a pretty decent artist, though.  Truth is, I didn't have to try real hard at that one.  I can draw, I love to do it, so I went with my flow.  Shit, for years I've been waiting around for my inner Rock Star to come out.  Every time I'd sit to write a description of a piece or post a new blog or video, I'd feel the tremendous pressure to WOW!!! you people.  I'm not a salesperson for Dali's sake.  I played one in 'real' life one time, though.

Yep, I wuz waitin' around for that Rock Star to emerge and I have only just realized that it already did quite awhile ago.  My art is the star and not because I necessarily drew it.  See- this is how it works for me- this whole 'art' thing.  No matter one's artistic ability, they are an artist.  It all comes out in so many different ways.  Whether one paints or sings or writes or dances or serves as a CEO of a Co., or greets you at
Wal -I despise that place-Mart, what one is doing is his art.  Right or wrong for them, it's what they are freely choosing to be at a particular moment in time.  It's not possible for my soul to Occupy anything other than my space.  Learning to be true to that space and share it with the world in the way that I love most defines the art and my existence.   

That's my fellowship to humanity- being who I am.  No sir, I'm not a Rock Star... but I'm pretty good.

Moving Forward...

Artistically speaking, my first love is drawing.  It's what I enjoy most- sitting down with pencils and pens and just letting my surreal way with things flow.  Painting runs a close second and the more I paint, the better my skills are becoming.  Having said that, it can be difficult to make a sustainable living with these loves alone. 

I have spent the last four years apprenticing with furniture finishing.  It has been a terrific experience, but like a lot of things in life, the time has come for me to move on.  I have found that finishing furniture in a production environment for restaurants, hotels and the like leaves little room for creativity.  My imagination is moving more towards recycling, repurposing and new designs using my artistic eye to give each piece it's own unique character and presence.

I'm a virtual unknown in the design field and am looking for Charleston area designers who are willing to give me a chance to prove my creative worth.  If you are a designer, please have a look at my art and if you see something that piques your interest, please drop me a line and let's talk!
